What inspired you to pursue optometry?
As a child, I was always infatuated by the health sciences. I knew I wanted to do something in the realm of medicine from a young age, but it wasn’t until my first eye exam in the third grade that I ever thought about eyes. I remember getting in the car after and saying, “Mom, I want to do that.” Well… she believes me now! I applied only to Wheaton College, MA, for undergrad with intentions on utilizing their 3+4 Year Optometry program with NECO, and the rest is history.

Why did you choose NECO?
Growing up in Reading, I always knew I wanted to stay close to home. NECO was the obvious answer, but I wanted to keep my options open. After stepping onto the campus, I knew it was the place for me. Everyone seemed so friendly, my tour guide knew someone in every room we stepped into, and the historic building was breathtaking. I could see myself in a place like that, and I consider myself lucky to have been able to follow through with that vision.

What was a memorable moment from your time at NECO?
I loved my whole experience at NECO. However, my favorite memory is the 2023 Welcome Back Barbeque when the festivities got moved indoors due to a thunderstorm that interrupted the event. We were all huddled in the basement, soaked with rain, our drinks, and good food. A group of us ended up in the old electronic classroom playing party games for so long we lost track of time and were asked to leave because the building was closing! I was also sent home with an entire tray of pasta salad, which was the cherry on top.

Who at NECO had the biggest impact on your journey?
My good friend Brynn Johnson, a fellow member of the class of 2026, had a huge impact on my journey at NECO. The two of us met at the end of our second year and supported each other through the grueling process that is Boards. We kept each other on track while reminding each other to take breaks, get good rest, and to have plenty of “crafternoons.” Not only did I have a stellar study buddy, but I found a lifelong friend. She is a great person who is going to be the best optometrist. I am honored to be her friend. Thank you, Brynn!

In three words, how would you describe your NECO experience?
Transformative, rewarding, and empowering.
